    ANTIQUE
    FIVES-LILLE FRENCH MAJOLICA/BARBOTINE WALL PLAQUE

was special to me because when we acquired it in the month of March, we also found a March 1952 copy of one of our favorite magazines which featured the same piece on its cover.
March 15, 1952 is my birthday!
    The theme of this impressive

    ANTIQUE
    FRENCH MAJOLICA/BARBOTINE WALL PLAQUE FROM
    FIVES-LILLE

is, of course, like most barbotine, “nature”.  It has high relief-molded 3-dimensional pears, blossoms, leaves, & a branch.  It is made with earthenware, probably ironstone, & has two look-alike companions that can be hunted down, if you are a Majolica aficionado who is interested in doing so . . . one with grapes & one with apples, the one most commonly found.  Together, they would make a glorious statement as a wall decoration trio!
    APPRECIATING THE HISTORY:
    The earliest examples of
    majolica
. . . brightly colored, low-fired earthenware . . . first emerged in the 1400s amid the Italian Renaissance. The use of a colorful tin glaze on ceramics was an innovation that Italian ceramic artists adopted from techniques they observed on Spanish imports.
Over the course of the centuries that followed, Majolica fell in & out of favor due to the changing tastes & styles of each era.  However, it reached its zenith during the 19th century when
Herbert Minton & his gifted art director & chief chemist, Leon Arnoux, together originated English majolica in 1851, at the Minton manufactory, which is
part of “The Potteries” in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
Around this same time, a fourth-generation potter from Belgium left his country to move to a small community in northern France called Fives-Lille.  With high hopes of making his fortune in the French pottery trade, Antione Gustave de Bruyn began his quest by building his own manufactory for the production of clay pipes & whistles.
The business quickly expanded to include earthenware & stoneware for daily use.  Art pottery & the newly popular majolica were soon incorporated into the line, & in 1887, the Fives-Lille Pottery published its catalog which included art pottery & the newly popular majolica/barbotine.
Soon majolica/barbotine became the body of choice for the production of humidors,
    jardinières
, vases, & umbrella stands.  The Manufactory’s silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889, was a testament to its success.
