    A
RARE ANTIQUE Mafra Palissy Majolica Horse Ewer & Stand, 1870-90, VHTF
It was on an afternoon in the Dallas Design District about 25 years ago that John & I first laid eyes on this
    "
RARE ANTIQUE Mafra Palissy Majolica Horse Ewer & Stand",
which, of course, at that time, we had no idea
    regarding
it provenance.  Today, we still do not know the provenance of this PARTICULAR piece of Portuguese Palissy Majolica, but, we do actually know what it is & some details of how it came to be.
Manuel Cipriano Gomes Mafra (1829-1905) was one of the foremost Portuguese ceramists of the 19th century who developed a vast array of work influenced by the natural world.  Manuel Mafra's pottery work, marked by naturalism, was strongly influenced by the 16th century
    French
engineer, craftsman, & potter, Bernard Palissy.
Palissy was famed for his "figulines rustiques" (rusticware), or decorative faience fired in a high-relief pattern inspired by nature, &
    especially
pond life: reptiles, insects, vegetation, flowers, & fish.  Palissy's work apparently often used molds from casts taken of dead specimens.
Mafra was actually christened Manuel Cipriano Gomes but took the name Mafra, the county of his origin, in 1853.  He moved to Caldas de Rainha to work at the famed Maria dos Cacos factory.  He was later to run the same factory from 1853 until his death in 1905.
Mafra pioneered a style of Palissy ware that featured a distinctive usage of moss as a decorative bed for fish, lizards, & insects, a style quickly adopted by other Portuguese manufacturers of Palissy ware.
The town was to become a magnet for other ceramicists, & it became the center for Portuguese Palissy Ware.  The factory produced faience wares & later 19th Century copies of Palissy's work were made in both faience & in majolica, a 19th century version of faience with an improved lead-based glaze.
The tradition Mafra developed of Portuguese Palissy-style ceramics became an important movement in the decorative a
rts in the second half of the 19th Century.
Until I began researching this little treasure of ours, I had no idea it was such a RARE FIND.  The material of the ewer (pitcher) is glazed earthenware, & it features a horse's head forming the spout with a dolphin handle.  Impressed back stamp of M. Mafra, Caldas, Portugal.  The crown impression indicates a date after 1870 which is when Mafra achieved Royal Patronage.
